Drug Free Club,UNILAG: Message to COMPSSA President-Elect

To the COMPSSA President-Elect, Comrade Adunmoye Ayoade Anuoluwa (Triple A)

It is with strong, unreserved positive vibes that we write to congratulate you on your thoroughly deserved victory!

We must say that the mannerism with which you went about getting the job done is highly inspirational. Emerging from a relatively low-key personality to becoming the Primus Inter-Peres of the Idi-Araba Campus of our great University shows the strength of character, strand of maturity and unbridled confidence that resides in you. It was in fact the "no-noise policy" that was employed by your campaign base that makes us awestruck as it resonates on the consciousness that elections can be still be won without the usually extravagant fanfare.

We however hope that, when the dust settles and power is consolidated, the rallying cries and campaign promises uttered will be largely honored and COMPSSAITES be afforded the undiluted dividends of the democratic process.

Congratulations once more, Sire.

Long live University of Lagos!
Long live CMUL!
Long live COMPSSA!

Prof Odukoya Wins 2016 May & Baker Professional Award

In what has been described by many as an award long overdue, Professor Olukemi Odukoya, a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and former dean, University of Lagos (UNILAG) Faculty of Pharmacy, has been announced winner of the 2016 Annual May & Baker professional service award in Pharmacy.

The award presentation which took place on November 8, 2016 at the opening ceremony of the 89th Annual National PSN Conference held at Idris Legbo Kutigi Conference Centre, Minna, Niger State had several distinguished pharmacists and fellows of the profession in attendance.

Prof. Odukoya has been credited with several trail-blazing innovations in academic pharmacy.

One of such is the introduction of annual White Coat Ceremony to complete transition of fresh UNILAG students from basic sciences into Pharmacy course work in 2014. This laudable initiative has since been adopted by a number of pharmacy schools in Nigeria, notably Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ibadan.

Speaking with Pharmanews, an elated Odukoya disclosed that much as she doesn’t like being caught unaware, she actually didn’t see the May & Baker Award coming.

“It is true that I have applied for the award before and failed to meet the requirements. This time, I took time to repackage myself well as I have learnt from my past mistakes.

“My message to other aspiring candidates hoping to win the award someday is simple. One can only aspire. It is not about doing something right. Aside brilliance, one must have done something for the profession. Needless to say, I have paid my dues,” she noted.

As expected, a thunderous applause rent the air when the amiable professor of pharmacognosy mounted the stage to receive her award which comes with a certificate, a plaque and an improved cash prize of N500,000.

Past winners of the May & Baker professional service award in Pharmacy included Pharm. (Lady) Adaeze Omaliko, managing director of Malix Pharmacy, Onitsha; Professor (Mrs.) Mbang Femi-Oyewo, MFR, former deputy vice chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University; Pharm. Ifeanyi Atueyi, managing director of Pharmanews Limited, Pharm (Mrs.) Margaret Obono, a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and Pharm. Folashade Lawal, a renowned community pharmacist.

In a similar vein, the May & Baker Award for excellence category went to the Lagos chapter of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) for producing the 2016 winner of the professional service award.

We are proud of our Professor,More to come!

THE LAST DANCE

I move my hips to the rhythm of the song, undulating it to the beats of the drum. I stomp and turn and finally I let go and cry. Tear drops as big as the pebbles by the riverside roll down my cheeks. THE LAST DANCE

I move my hips to the rhythm of the song, undulating it to the beats of the drum. I stomp and turn and finally I let go and cry. Tear drops as big as the pebbles by the riverside roll down my cheeks. I weep for my innocence, thrown away like trash, I weep for the seasons to come I will never see, I shed tears for my lost womanhood, for the man I will never know, for the babies I will never suckle.
I am the betrothed of the gods, to be offered as a sacrifice to cleanse the land of evil. I am the sacrificial lamb, to wash away the sins of the people. I was born a twin, the younger of the duo with feet first and the other twin dead. I did not cry for hours and did not suckle for days. I came with beauty untold, beauty not seen for the many years past, not since the three villages merged to form one.
I was named when I was 13 moons old, a harvest year after the day of my birth. This alone was a sign of what was to come. The feast lasted 3 days and 3 nights. “How they did know it was me”? I asked, and my mother said that even as a tiny baby I had such beauty that there was no doubt.
I grew up under my mother, who watched the days pass with a mixture of happiness and sadness, happy that she at least had a child to call hers, sad that the child would not last long in the world, that the child will bear no progeny. I grew up also under the Old Wise Woman, the right hand of the gods who was reputed to know all and see all. She also watched the days pass with happiness and sadness, happiness that one had been found, sadness that I was quite literally the harbinger of a new dawn.
Days passed and weeks, and months and seasons and the time drew near. The old wise woman had convened with the gods and a day for the celebration was chosen. It was the full moon after I marked eighteen years. The day is bright and clear, the sun favouring us and the rain forgiving. The air thrummed with excitement for this was the first sacrifice most except the very old had witnessed in a lifetime.
I am to be buried alive in the shrine of the gods and dug up seven market days later and my body burnt on their altar. I do not want to die but what do I do? It is my destiny and I was born to its, and all the other maidens past. The tempo is now fast as I dance around the clearing. I remember the men who came fortnight ago alluding that the ceremony is barbaric, that I die for nothing. They are too late. Not for others perhaps, but for me they are.
I dance around to the tempo of the music, to the birds that sing, to the wind that dances. I dance, with all my soul, I dance for this is my last.

World Kidney Day

March 10th of every year marks the World Kidney day.

Pharmgists today brings to you how to keep the kidney healthy  as the kidneys are very  important organs in the body

The kidney is an organ, a bean-shaped organ located at the abdominal cavity close to back (anatomy students can add more to that tho)

They are responsible for some life processes such as maintenance of water balance in the body and urine formation.

Some of the things to keep the kidney healthy are:

Keep fit and active

Keeping fit helps to reduce your blood pressure and therefore reduces the risk of Chronic Kidney Disease.

The concept “on the move for kidney health” is a worldwide collective march involving the public, celebrities and professionals moving across a public area by walking, running and cycling. Why not join them – by whatever means you prefer! Check out the events section of the WKD website for more information.

Keep regular control of your blood sugar level

About half of people who have diabetes develop kidney damage, so it is important for people with diabetes to have regular tests to check their kidney functions.

Kidney damage from diabetes can be reduced or prevented if detected early. It is important to keep control of blood sugar levels with the help of doctors or pharmacists, who are always happy to help.

Monitor your blood pressure

Although many people may be aware that high blood pressure can lead to a stroke or heart attack, few know that it is also the most common cause of kidney damage.

The normal blood pressure level is 120/80. Between this level and 139/89, you are considered prehypertensive and should adopt lifestyle and dietary changes. At 140/90 and above, you should discuss the risks with your doctor and montior your blood pressure level regularly. High blood pressure is especially likely to cause kidney damage when associated with other factors like diabetes, high cholesterol and Cardio- Vascular Diseases.

Eat healthy and keep your weight in check

This can help prevent diabetes, heart disease and other conditions associated with Chronic Kidney Disease.

Reduce your salt intake.

The recommended sodium intake is 5-6 grams of salt per day (around a teaspoon). In order to reduce your salt intake, try and limit the amount of processed and restaurant food and do not add salt to food. It will be easier to control your intake if you prepare the food yourself with fresh ingredients. For more information on nutrition and kidney friendly cooking, visit our nutrition page

Maintain a healthy fluid intake

Although clinical studies have not reached an agreement on the ideal quantity of water and other fluids we should consume daily to maintain good health, traditional wisdom has long suggested drinking 1.5 to 2 litres (3 to 4 pints) of water per day.

Consuming plenty of fluid helps the kidneys clear sodium, urea and toxins from the body which, in turn, results in a “significantly lower risk” of developing chronic kidney disease, according to researchers in Australia and Canada. The findings, the researchers said, do not advocate “aggressive fluid loading”, which can cause side effects, but they do provide evidence that moderately increased water intake, around two litres daily, may reduce the risk of decline in kidney function. It’s important to keep in mind that the right level of fluid intake for any individual depends on many factors including gender, exercise, climate, health conditions, pregnancy and breast feeding. In addition, people who have already had a kidney stone are advised to drink 2 to 3 litres of water daily to lessen the risk of forming a new stone.

Do not smoke

Smoking slows the flow of blood to the kidneys. When less blood reaches the kidneys, it impairs their ability to function properly. Smoking also increases the risk of kidney cancer by about 50 percent.

Do not take over-the-counter pills on a regular basis

Common drugs such non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen are known to cause kidney damage and disease if taken regularly.

Such medications probably do not pose significant danger if your kidneys are relatively healthy and you use them for emergencies only, but if you are dealing with chronic pain, such as arthritis or back pain, work with your doctor to find a way to control your pain without putting your kidney.
